Dear Helene, Our son Todd forwarded your new webpage to us and it is wonderful - the pictures and the idea of doing this is really great.  Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many of our kids.  I am going to Israel on Wednesday with our daughter to celebrate Chana Rachel Kobernick's wedding (Yair (Ross) Kobernick;s daughter). Thanks again for the joy of this wonderful webpage.       Shirley Kobernick

Hi all!  The Peterseils are friends of ours who live in the neighborhood.
We've had children together in gan and in school, and their oldest daughter
is Leah and Yocheved's gymnastics teacher.  I thought it would do you good,
as it did me, to get this positive take on the situation here, and encourage
you to send it to as many people as possible.  You should know that ethics
in combat is, and has always been, a fundamental part of army training here,
contrary to the image of the cruel, oppressive aggressors so unfairly and
unfortunately portrayed by international media.
Naomi Kroll

           From: Yakov Petersil, Jerusalem
I'm writing just to let you know that while we live on Aza St. (about two
blocks from the terrible explosion of Cafe Moment), we're okay -- aside from
the shock of realizing that even living next door to Bibi Netanyahu affords
you little if any protection (and he has four guards full time!).
But I'm also writing to you because my son, Nachum, was on Israeli TV,
representing his commando unit who were fighting
in Tulkarum, a stronghold of Palestinian terrorism. He was asked about how
he felt having to enter people's homes looking for armed terrorists, and
what it was like going into the Palestinian refugee camps.
Nachum said that it was very difficult going into the homes
of Palestinian families; he described the terror the children felt seeing
soldiers enter their homes, and how his unit tried very hard to allay the
fears of the women and children by explaining what they were trying to do.
He also said that he spoke to a number of families who surprised him by
ranting and raving against Arafat and the fact that all the money he
received (and continues to receive) never trickled down to them -- they
reminisced of times when they could get work in Israel and enjoy the
benefits that Israeli life has to offer.
Then, in response to a question by the reporter, dealing with whether he
felt guilty about what he was doing, Nachum answered (in Hebrew of course)
that he was fighting not only for his country but also for the quality of
life of its citizens. That, he emphasized, is what allows him to go from
house to house, hunting terrorists and putting his life in danger -- so that
we here, sitting in our homes can live our lives as Jews. When he hears how
the terrorists are still active, he realizes his job, difficult and at times
heart-rending as it is, not finished.
This has been Nachum's attitude for quite some time. Those us in the family,
currently not in the army, have wanted to do something to also help the
quality of life in Israel. We could not just sit here knowing that while
Nachum and his friends are protecting us, we aren't "doing" something. So,
Tiferet, my daughter, came up with THE SIMCHA FAIR! which will take place
April 1, Chol Hamoed Pesach, a giant Fair for parents and children in the
International Convention Center in Jerusalem (Binyaney Haooma), which will
help Victims of Terror by
donating to the organization ONE FAMILY.
We've hired clowns and go carts and lots of entertainment for the kids; and
there will be booths for adults and children to buy Israeli goods; a talent
show for kids by kids; and Lenny Solomon from Shlock Rock and Chaim Dovid
will be singing on
the small stage we're setting up -- they've donated their time!
Quality of life is what it is all about, and while many of you don't live in
Israel, much less in Jerusalem, we want you to know that although the media
makes us look like we are running around wringing our hands and afraid all
the time, the truth
is that we are a resilient nation, with fine young men and women protecting
us against the hordes knocking at the gate.
We are living our lives fully, and while we worry, we also go about our
business --which includes the "business" of filling the lives of our
children with Simcha (joy).
What can you do? If you're in Jerusalem for Pesach -- helping our hotel
business survive -- come to the Fair. Until then,
on Wednesday, March 13, the Rabbinate has asked for a day of fasting and
saying psalms. Join us. Nachum and his comrades will be in Tulkarum or Jenin
someplace filled with terrorists. He should feel our presence, perhaps in
the only way we can offer it....with our hearts.
All the best,
Yakov,

Hi Eemah,
I went to DC for the rally in support of Israel, on a busload of college
students and community members from Ann Arbor.  We went overnight, leaving
at midnight the night before the rally, and then returned the next night
following the rally- twelve hours each way.  Two of my kids went as well,
Emily with me and Natalie with a NCSY bus.  One of the most amazing things
was seeing tens of buses from every state headed to the rally at every rest
stop along the way.  Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois- and then being in
front of the Capitol with 100,000 others who are concerned for Israel at
this time.  Emily remarked that even in Israel she has never experienced
anything quite like this.  I can't say I agreed with everything that was
said at the rally, but being there was an incredible privilege and a
powerful experience.  And I am sure there were other former Madrichim there
too!
Hope all is well with you.
Fondly,
Jenny Lewis

Hi Eemah!!

I've been thinking.... my kids can't be the only kids of TBI alums going to
a Jewish camp this summer.  Would you be willing to share our camping
destinations so our kids can look out for TBI family??   Jessie and Josh are
going to Camp Coleman, the UAHC camp here in the south and would love to
meet new friends connected to their mom!!

thanks

This is some interesting info from my brother Jeff.

Dear Friends,  A couple of exciting astronomical events underway:  * Over
the next couple of weeks, looking west just after sunset you can view all 5
planets known in ancient times --- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and
Saturn. This is the closest alignment of the 5 planets in our sky for the
next 40 years, so don't miss it! No equipment needed: just your eyes and a
clear sky. For details on where to look and what to see, check out the
following article at SkyandTelescope.com:
http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/planets/article_572_1.asp FYI:
the ancient Greeks actually counted 7 "planets": the 5 above plus the Sun
and Moon. Note that the Earth didn't count, since it was considered the
center of the universe. The Sun and Moon counted because like the planets,
they gradually move among the fixed stars of the constellations as seen
from Earth; the word "planet" means "wanderer." The 7 planets are the
origin of the names for the 7 days of the week. (It's interesting to note
that Uranus is barely visible to the naked eye, but so faint that ancient
people never noticed it. If they had, we might have 8 days a week!) The
correspondence between the planets and days is obvious in English only in a
few cases, but easy to see in French, Spanish, and some other languages;
confirm for yourself that they are: SUNday, MOONday, Tuesday (Mars),
Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), and SATURNday.  *
The Hubble Space Telescope's new camera, installed by Shuttle astronauts
during a March visit, is working spectacularly. You've probably already
seen some of the 4 newly released pictures in the newspaper or on TV. You
can see them or download them in your choice of resolution at either of the
following two Hubble links (the first has more options, the second is more
user-friendly):

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of
him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar
and proceeded to fill it with rocks right to the top, rocks about 2" in
diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that
it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them in
to the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles,of course, rolled into the
open areas between the rocks. The students laughed. He asked his students
again if the jar was full? They agreed that yes, it was. The professor then
picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand
filled up every-thing else.

"Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life.
The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health,
your children - anything that is so important to you that if it were lost,
you would be nearly destroyed. The pebbles are the other things in life that
matter, but on a smaller scale. The pebbles represent things like your job,
house, or car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff."

"If you put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there is no room for
the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and
time on the small stuff, material things, you will never have room for the
things that are truly most important."

****** Pay attention to the things that are critical in your life.

****** Play with your children.

****** Take time to get medical checkups.

****** Take your partner out dancing.

****** There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a
dinner party and fix the disposal.

****** Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter.

****** Set your priorities, the rest is just pebbles and sand.

****** May there always be work for your hands to do;

****** May your purse always hold a coin or two;

****** May the sun always shine on your windowpane;

****** May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;

****** May the hand of a friend always be near you;

****** May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

(An Irish Blessing)

OK, this is what you have to do . . . Believe in yourself, know what you
want, and make it happen

  Hi everyone!
I had a wonderful visit with Lani and Erin last weekend...........and also an amazing mini-reunion with some of my high school buddies!
I returned from Berkeley just in time for Lisa Pappelbaum's wedding......
The wedding was lovely!
Lisa's dad went to camp with Peter Yarrow(of Peter, Paul and Mary).....Peter sang to the couple under the Chupah and then led a sing-a-long with everyone at the dinner!
Sooooo much fun to celebrate these happy occasions!
Hope all is well with all of you!
Shabbat Shalom!
Love,
Eemah

Enjoy the following letters from our Madrichim:

Well, I happen to be in Kansas City for my medical school graduation.  I spoke with Dara who said that I had to check the madrichim web site....so I did!  You are wonderful.  I can't believe how many times I saw my own face...a few years younger- although many people would say that I look exactly the same :).

I'm off to Hawaii in a few days to start my residency in pediatrics with the army (I'll be a captain :).  I'll be there for 3 years if you wanna visit :).

I'm going to be social with my family and friends, but I wanted to say hello and thanks for creating such a fun site!  Memory lane.  We definitely had some great times.

Take care and I'll talk to you soon.

Hi Eemah,
Quick response regarding kids going to Jewish Camp this Summer.

My oldest son, Jared Feldman will be a counselor at Camp Newman.  My middle son, Elan, will be attending Camp Solael at Swig.

Point of reference, sons's of Jaci (Greenspan) Feldman, nephews of Abra Greenspan, Esther Stevens, Helene Singer.

Best regards to all.
Jaci Feldman (Greenspan)
Hi,
Hope this note finds you all well.  I love hearing all about your escapes.  Keep the e-mails coming.

We were notified earlier this week that Jared was accepted at UCSD.  This is has been his first choice for college so he is really flying high.  Jon and I could not be happier with this choice for so many reasons.

Anyway as you can probably imagine my mind immediately turns to his finding some part time employment and there are some fairly logical extensions to that!

If you could send me the name of who he should contact, etc. that would be great.  He will be out of town all Summer so he would like to make initial contacts before school is out for the year.

Now the bragging:  I really think that he will make a wonderful addition to the Beth Israel teaching staff.  He has gone through the Madrichim program here at Judea.  He has worked in the classroom, learning lab, private tutoring and weekend retreats (also busing tables for extended kiddish, but that's a different talent!)  He was Confirmed last year and is in the post-confirmation class this year (we do things a year later than some congregations).  He has attended Jewish Day School for the last four years.  (Abraham Joshua Heschel and now Milken Community High School).  That also means four years of Hebrew studies at the high school level although I don't know what that means in terms of actually competence!  He recently participated in a youth conference at UAHC - bible studies.    He will be a counselor at Camp Newman this Summer.  (Anyone he should make sure he meets while he is there?)   Regarding other teaching experience he taught Karate to both adults and kids (priv!
ate and group
lessons) for three years.  He has taken a rest from Karate but hopefully he will go back to it as he was working on his third degree black belt.

He has also done some private math tutoring.

Thanks so much for looking this over and giving us some hints as to where to start.

All the best.

Jaci Feldman

Hi Eemah,
So excited to finally be on this famous email list!  I hope all is well with you in San Diego.

I am in New York right now finishing up my MBA at Columbia Business School.  When I graduate in May, I am going to tour Spain for three weeks and then move to the San Francisco area.  Can't wait to get back to CA!  I am still looking for a job, but expect to return to real estate finance in some capacity (that's what I did before b-school).  Anyway, that's the news with me.

Also, will you change my email address in your list to:  lori.ginsburg@stanfordalumni.org

That will continue to reach me after I graduate in May.  Also, if you don't have Hillary Small's email (now Hillary Weiner), here it is:  hillary_weiner@yahoo.com

Thanks!

XOXO
Lori

Hi Eemah!

Good to hear from you!  You know, I think Stacy Ziman forwarded me an email from you a while back with the whole madrichim network  . . .

Let's see. . . a little bio info about me.  As you can tell from my email address, I got married and changed my name.  I married Brett Weiner, who I met at Emory University during my freshman year of college.  We were married on February 26, 2000, in San Diego.  We recently celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary.  One of our big claims to fame from our marriage is that our wedding announcement was on Jay Leno a few months after the wedding - Brett submitted our wedding announcement from his hometown newspaper (Sharon, MA) to the comedy editor of Leno's show.  So, the newspaper announcement with our picture and the heading "Small-Weiner Wedding" was on Leno.

After graduating from Emory University in 1996, I moved to San Francisco to attend law school at University of California, Hastings College of Law.  I graduated from Hastings in 1999, and have been practicing law (business litigation) since then for a small firm in San Francisco (there is an old picture of me on our firm website www.wsnlaw.com).  Brett and I live in Noe Valley in San Francisco.  Brett is a partner at a small public relations agency called Launchsquad.

That's about it for the basics.  My family still lives in San Diego (as I'm sure you know).  They are all doing well.  Matt works for Qualcomm and Allie recently started her own PR agency.  Do you have my brother and sister's email address?  Matt's is msmall@qualcomm.com and Allie's is ab_small@yahoo.com.  I also got back in touch with Lori Ginsburg recently.  She is living in New York, finishing up business school.  Her email address is lrg62@columbia.edu.

I tried to get into the master list on the website, but was unable to.  What is the password?

Take care.

Hillary Small

Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know we welcomed Jake Benjamin into the world on March 15th!  We are all doing well, although not looking forward to the sleepless nights again!  2 yr old Matthew is wondering what we brought home, and when it's going back!!  I am sure he'll adjust soon (we hope)!!

Love,
Jill (Witte) Cayelli

Hello Eemah!
Nice to hear from you.  In case you want some bio information from me, I am now a Junior at Duke University, majoring in Economics.  Not much else to report...still living in San Diego with my family when I am not at school.
Have a great day!
Sarah
Happy anniversary!  38 years and still so young!

I just got back from 2 weeks in Israel.  What a trip - what a time to be there.  Yair (Ross) and I weren't able to see each other but we did speak twice.  I'm sure we'll be succesful next trip!

I hope you're doing well!  Take care -

Don Goor
At Norman Mann's 80th birthday bash last weekend, Todd Kobernick told me that Ross's eldest daughter is getting married on April 30th!!! He swore that Ross would be a grandfather within a year of the marriage!

Letter by Sen. Joe Lieberman -
Date: Wed, 15 May 2002 09:53:48 -0400

Subject: Fw: TO THE PEOPLE OF FRANCE - IN REMEMBRANCE

Liberty, equality, fraternity! Does the French nation recall that slogan?

The current French tolerance of and indifference to the wave of
attacks upon French Jews speaks clearly of the decline of the French
national  character.

The French have forgotten! Two hundred and some odd years ago
the suffering  French populace erupted in revolution against tyranny. They
cried for and fought for liberty, fraternity, equality for all in every aspect of
French society.

The French have forgotten! But I remember! I still have in my
mind the heartbreaking image of the Parisian gentleman from whose eyes
the tears fell copiously as he watched the Nazi troops marching triumphantly
into Paris. The face of that Frenchman still lives in my mind sixty years
later.   It is the same as the faces of so many French Jews today.

The French have forgotten! But I remember! I remember the ecstasy, the flowers, the kisses with which the French people greeted their American and British liberators from Nazi terror.

The French have forgotten! They have forgotten the dehumanizing
result of terror upon themselves. They have forgotten the shame of Vichy
France. Those who watch with indifference the attacks upon their neighbors
sink into degeneracy themselves.

The French have forgotten brotherhood and love of others than
themselves.  They have forgotten equal justice. They have forgotten that a
nation without strength of morality and character is a nation already in the
lower depths of degradation.

So, just as the Swiss were part of the Nazi problem sixty years
ago, the French are part of the problem of world terrorism today.
As the French casually watch their Jewish citizens attacked let them
remember how they, the French, acquiesced in cowardice at the rape of
Czechoslovakia by the Nazis in 1938 only to suffer under the Nazi heel so soon
after.

My contempt for present day France is accompanied by great
regret. We gave the lives of American boys to save them once. They have
forgotten.  However, we Americans have not forgotten. All Americans with
integrity of character must boycott France. I hope large numbers of you will
join me in this.

If this e-mail is forwarded by just 1/2 of all recipients it could reach
10,000,000 Americans in a matter of days.  Let's make the French remember!

Joe Lieberman
