Shabbat Shalom and Happy July!
We just returned from a wonderful trip up north for the birth and bris of our new grandson
AVI NATHAN SCHLAFMAN son of Dan and Jill brother of Sydney, nephew of Lani and Erin!
We spent a few days in and around Bodega Bay......and in Berkeley with Lani and Erin...As we were walking back to our car after a yumbo breakfast at Sauls we walked right into JIMMY(now James) Goldstein! He is still just so adorable!
After visiting with Dan,Jill and grandkids in Palo Alto, we headed into San Francisco for a mini Detroit Central High (and Mumford too) reunion! We met Arlene and Larry Saidman (parents of Esther, Rachel and Steven) there....and Steve and Marty Gross' aunt Sharon....It was so much fun to see people who I hadn't seen in 40-50 years!! .....(They sure looked old!!)
Anyhow...we are now home.....I dropped by the Bendetts yesterday to see Maura......She is a well known artist in LA. Her work is exquisite! I guess all that doodling during Hebrew School really paid off!!
See you all at the Shores....tower 32.......I have extra boogie boards......
Keep those bios coming! Here are the latest ones:
Love,
Eemah
Hello, Eemah
Thanks for the email. I hope all is well with you and your family. Please give my love to Lani. I haven't spoken with her in years. I can't believe Daniel is 31!!
We are doing well out here in Charlotte, NC. My husband, Adam, and I are expecting our second child in August. Our daughter, Kaylie, is 2 1/4 years old. She's a joy!
Adam and I are both physical therapists. I stay home with Kaylie during the week and work Saturdays at the hospitals. It works out very well.
I have fond memories of Madrichim. I still remember a lot of the song!!!
Speaking of singing, I sing in our Temple's choir. It's a lot of fun. We have a great cantor, and the other choir members are wonderful too.
I didn't receive an attached mailing list or newsletter. Was I supposed to?
By the way, since the Madrichim program is 32 years old...how long is the song now???!!!
Hope all is well with you.
Thanks for getting in touch.

Here is an article written about my bluegrass band in
the Contra Costa Times. It's basically my only
extracurricular activity these days with the new baby.

Well I've been reading everyone's bios and it is a lot of fun. So here's
mine. I moved from LA to Scarsdale NY with stops in DC, Philadelphia and
NYC along the way, all thanks to my husband, Sam. We've been married for 12
years, have two kids - Yael - 4 and a half and Kenny 16 months and Jaz our 5
year old dog. I'm a full time mom, though I do work one day a week for a
midsized private equity firm. It keeps the work side of my brain some what
in shape. My daughter just "graduated" from nusery school and will start
kindergarten at Solomon Schechter in the fall (I married out of the faith to
a Conservative Jew!). As a graduation present from school Yael received a
tape with all sorts of jewish folk songs. Some of the songs really brought
me back to the good old days of hebrew school and Madrachim. Though my
hebrew is rusty at best, I'd say I have an excellent vocabulary due to the
wonderful teaching methods of eemah. My husband was pleasantly surprised
that I knew most of the songs on the tape. My lastest accomplishment was
chanting a torah portion at our synagogue's first family weekend retreat.
The weekend family camp also brought back fond memories of hebrew camp.
That's all for now.

Shabbat Shalom!
Hope you all are happy and healthy and enjoying a peaceful Shabbat!
We went to dinner and services last Friday evening.....It was Rabbi Kamen's first Shabbat service at Beth Israel and the installation of the new board of directors.
The dinner was yumbo...thanks to Gail Resnik Malkus(mother of Dana, Karen and Sari)....and the service was warm and wonderful!
I am very impressed with our new Rabbi....
But....I must admit that the best part was to see
so many people that I care about...
(whoops...about whom I care)
Karen Foster Silberman was singing in the volunteer choir....Her husband Jeff Silberman, was being installed as the President -elect of our Temple....and so many nice people were there!
Kate and Amy Haimsohn, Debbie Chester Geary, Marcia Hazan(Mother of Sam and Shayna), Bonnie and Barry Graff(Erin and Ali), Barbara Goldman(Scott and Greg), Phil Finkel(Lee)The Lyons(Cliff), The Pollocks(Patrick and Tony), Michael Coleman and his fiancee, Karen, and lots of others...It seems and tho' everyone really likes Rabbi Kamen!
The boogie boarding has been great! Dara and Judith Wolochow and Alex found me at the Shores with Anne Goldberg Nagorner's son Evan..(I'm helping him with his Bar Mitzvah prep...We study then we boogie)..Tonight we and the Pintos are invited to the Gendelmans for Shabbat dinner ...Joel is in town from Seattle....
Sunday is a Mazal Tov celebration for Lenie Greenspan and we also plan to drop by the Wolochows to see Judith and Alex's son, Lucien! Ellen Pappelbaum had a baby daughter yesterday!
Lani and Erin are in France for Jason (from Swig)and Kimmie's wedding....Scott Coleman and his girlfriend are there too! These are most of the gang from Madrichim and Swig that traveled to Europe together after High School graduation!
Mucho Love,
Eemah
I'm happy to hear that you're so happy! I've heard about Rabbi Kamin - mostly from Beth Israel members! I had dinner with Betty Byrnes in Jerusalem- she too seems quite happy.
I actually was at my dad's big event - representing the entire family. It was really very nice - it was good to see him honored (he's usually the one seeing me honored lately so it was nice for the turn-around!).
Israel was fantastic. It was the most wonderful sabbatical. I've been working with Diane Schuster (a prof. of adult learning at Claremont Colleges - do you know her?) on adult development and learning and growth - and she used me as a research tool! I journaled to her about my learning and my own "growth" process and she shot back questions that actually helped make the time not only wonderful but meaningful as well. I spent time learning in classes at a place called Yakar, and I did some research and writing of my own, and I did some advising to students at HUC. I also spent lots of time enjoying myself, taking walks, drinking leisurely coffees, visiting with Israeli friends, etc. etc. Every sabbatical should be this good!
Of course the hard part is coming back to work. The merger continues to haunt us - while it continues to bring good things there is still the political fall out as well as the administrative challenges. The sabbatical reminded me that I didn't become a rabbi for this!
Anyway -that's the news on my front - nothing as exciting as a new grandson! I'm off to Temple for the 2nd Bar Mitzvah of the day and the off to a wedding - this summer is filled with weddings of kids I confirmed! I guess that's the nice part of being in one place for 15 years. I'm on the Bima at the B'nai Mitzvah of kids I named and I'm marrying kids I did youth group with!
Next week I'm off to Swig and then to UAHC Kallah in Santa Cruz to teach. Its a full summer!
Shavua Tov!

Hi Eemah,
Glad to hear things are going well. I'm currently in my 3rd year at ucla and am loving it, classes are pretty tough but there are many resources that i utilize whenever i need help. I'm majoring in applied math and need all the help i can get. I ended up pledging a fraternity, SAE. That's going well, it's fun living in the house but it takes more discipline than i'm used to if i ever want to study or anything. I also play on the club ultimate frisbee team up here. It's a pretty competitive sport actually, but loads of fun, plus, i can play other schools and it keeps me in shape. Keep sending the emails

Dear Schlafman Familia:
Happiest New Years to you as well. We've been pretty busy here. Just got done celebrating the holidays with family in Sacramento and Santa Barbara but now to the fun stuff... (just kidding)... we had a wonderful one week mini family reunion in Park City Utah with Mom, Dad, Wendi and her family and Jill. Though the call of Mormonism was strong while there, we somehow managed to leave without converting. Mom and Dad won a week at an amazing BIG Park City condo from a silent auction. It was a blast. Then, at the end of November to early December Cathie and I got to run away for a week to Paris... WITHOUT THE KIDS!!!! Yep, SuperGrandma and Grandpa Temkin did the babysitting while we "suffered" and somehow made it through the week without them. Cathie had a conference for work in Paris for two days which was the excuse we used to go. While she was there, I went to London and visited friends, then we met up in Paris for the remaining 6 days. Now we're back home trying to figure out how to get back to Paris. Oh well...
Hope all is well and wishing you the very best New Year.
All our love,
Gregg, Cathie, Josh (9), Alex (7) and Riley (3) Temkin :-)
Great to hear from you, Eemah! I'll look forward to reading about the updates on everyone. I've been working at a law firm (called Covington & Burling) in NYC for the last 15 months or so and have been doing well. I've lived in NYC for about 3 1/2 years after graduating from law school out West, and have really been enjoying it, though I do miss San Diego, at times (like today, when it's freezing!).
Otherwise, not much worth reporting. I'm glad to hear that Daniel is doing well. Hope everyone else is as well. Best wishes,
Sean (Hecker)

Here's the latest news!
Dear Eemah:
I love getting your weekly reports. It's great that you are keeping the madrichim family connected.
I got married in May to a beautiful woman named Ilona Telefus. She is a medical student at UCDavis (president of her class...) with one more year to go before she pursues Ob/Gyn.
We had a great honeymoon in Sedona, Arizona, where we mostly relaxed and unwound, interspersed with a few adventures like horseback riding, jeep tours, and a helicopter tour of the red rocks. It was really amazing.
After we returned, we moved into our new apartment in San Francisco and I started my residency in Internal Medicine at Highland Hospital in Oakland. It has been a whirlwind last couple of months, to say the least.
I just got back from LA for a quick visit to see Jamie and my 14 mo. nephew, Jack. He might be the best looking child I have ever seen, even though he doesn't look anything like his mom....
I am still close with Drue Polakoff and Scott Poster. Drue also lives in SF and runs her own Gap! Scott is high-rolling in Vegas.
I guess that's all the news that's fit to print for now. Thanks again for keeping us posted on your life and maintaining the Madrichim community.
Love,

Dan (Danny) Meyers here....A quick note...If any of you remember Jack Cohen
from our school days at Jackson, Horace Mann, and Crawford....He just got
married last week. He married a nice Jewish girl from Bolivia..Had a
beautiful wedding near the water by Sea World. Fantastic event. Live band.
Lots of fun. Also saw an old friend there--Mark Pollack. For those who know
them, they are both doing great. Mark has a new baby girl too. Adorable.
That's it for now. My first time contributing here...By the way I live in La
Mirada, am a middle school teacher and part time professional videographer. I
have been married 13 years, have 3 kids-2 grown stepsons and a 12 year old
daughter of my own. Pretty peaceful and settled nowadays, but very busy
between jobs. Dan
Good Shabbes to you to!
Mazel tov on the bris - I can see that a dynasty is forming!
Cute story - I'm performing the wedding for a former youth group president from Judea and it turns out that his bride to be was a teacher with you while she was at UCSD. She calls you eemah and everything! Her name is Melonie Monarch and she sends her love!
