Enjoy the following........
As some of you already know, I left my former position at Cleary, Gottlieb and started working last week at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. I'd be happy to talk more about the new job with anyone who is interested, but I just wanted to give everyone my new contact information for now; you can find it in the signature block of this e-mail.
Actually, I lied: I can't resist giving a little more information. The Brennan Center's website is quite good, so the mildly curious might want to take a look to get an idea of what I'm up to. I'll put in a plug for folks who care about judicial independence, judicial selection, etc. to subscribe to our twice-a-week e-newsletter with news items on those subjects (I'm now in charge of editing it, so you know where to direct complaints). You can see the most recent one at http://www.brennancenter.org/programs/pester/pages/view_elerts.php?end_date=1. If you like it, you can subscribe at http://www.brennancenter.org/resources/order_ji_elert.html.

Hi Eemah.
It's great hearing about all of the updates and achievements of the
Madrichim. Rick has done an awesome job for the website. I'll look for
some embarrassing photos of a few guys wearing skirts and other female
undergarments while at Camp Swig.
How is everybody down in San Diego? Billie Jo and I sure miss everybody
down there.
We're living in the foothills above Cupertino. It has a wonderful view of
Silicon Valley and parts of the East Bay. But, it takes 20 minutes just to
go to the grocery store!
Emma Rae and Hannah are 2 years old now. Both are in excellent
health. Hannah is the one we were concerned about during the pregnancy and
through her first year. Thankfully, she doesn't have any of the health
problems the doctors warned us about. Both girls are a lot of fun to play
with and very outgoing. Mom stays home teaching them sign language, how to
stack blocks, sing, dance and color (on paper, walls, windows, etc).
Billie Jo thinks they are up to about 200 words. We hear a lot of 2 and 3
word sentences and now are starting to hear 4 and 5 word sentences. Their
favorite words are No and cookies, but not in the same sentence. And, they
are signing about 100 words. It's amazing that they can communicate with
us by signing, even before they had much of a spoken vocabulary. I really
can't believe how far they have come. And, how much they defied the dire
predictions by the doctors. I think a lot has to do with Billie Jo and how
she treated herself during the pregnancy and 12 weeks of bedrest. Mainly
eating very healthy and constantly, with more than a few prayers thrown in
for good measure. :)
I'm working for PalmSource, Inc. We are a subsidiary of Palm and soon we
will be our own company. PalmSource writes the Operating System for Palm
based handheld computers including Sony Clie, Palm and Handspring. I'm a
Project Manager supporting the Engineering IT organization. I was promoted
from being a System Administrator responsible for the servers and programs
the engineers relied on.
But, it's time to move home. Everything that is important to us is in San
Diego. I'm actively searching for work in San Diego. Ideally, I want to
continue with Project Management or return to a more hands-on role as a
System Administrator. Realistically, I know it's a tight job market for
IT. And if there are opportunities in other fields where I can transfer my
skills, I want to pursue them. Should you know of someone in human
resources, an IT recruiter or anybody else I should contact, please let me
know.
Take care.

We had an interesting experience this evening. The public elemetary school
our kids attend is actually quite good and ranks #1 in the district. So
when they sent home a flyer about multicultural night our daughter wanted
to go and we said ok. It was pot luck and everyone was supposed to bring a
dish representing their culture. So being one of three Jewish families
attending we if course brought Kugel. Ours was potato and the other two
were sweet and non-sweet kugel. Everything was great and all the different
cultural food was wonderful. After dinner there was a fashion show and a
few songs from different countries. The costumes were beautiful and many
countries and cultures were represented. But the most intriguing of them
all was the costumes, musical instruments and flag from the country of
Palestine. Yes, the COUNTRY of Palestine as was stated by the narrator.
Now I have to admit that neither our family nor any other Jewish families
participated in the fashion show and thus the Jewish culture and Israel
were not represented. But to blantantly state that the country of
Palestine even exists when one cannot find it on any current world map
(unless of course it was printed and approved by Arafat) is flat out wrong.
So next year, I guess we need to do our part to be included. Although from
the looks of it, if we want to be included there could be some interesting
conflicts to go along with it.

Next weekend is Hebrew Camp #33.......Dan will be 33 in April and I was pregnant with him at the very first one!
Remember Raintree Ranch and that wonderful ranchhouse? Not to mention the A frame.......Michael Zeldin taught dancing on the patio.......which reminds me......I spent last weekend at a Pardes (Progressive Association of Reform Day Schools)conference in LA......Michael spoke at several sessions......from dance instructor to DR\Professor! His lovely daughter Sivan was there for one of the sessions at the Max Factor Chapel at Wilshire Blvd Temple..

Gotta go!
Have a super Shabbat!
Love,
Eemah
Enjoy!
Hi Eemah,
I was so surprised to see that my name made the Madrichim list! And what a way to find out that I was engaged to Love Slipock! (see below, almost sounded like it...). ;)
Hope all is well with you! Cantor Merel is marrying us in September. He and I have spoken several times now over the phone. It has been so nice to reconnect with him. I met my fiance, Josh, at business school at Columbia in New York. Turned out he was from Palo Alto and already had a job lined up in CA when we met. I was more than happy to move home to CA when I was done with school. We live in Oakland now and just bought a house, so this will definitely be a busy year! Crazy that I had to go all the way to NYC to meet a nice Jewish boy from CA. :) Go figure...
Look forward to more updates!
Love, Lori Ginsburg
I know, it's only been about 8 months since the last time Karen and I did this, but I'd like to think we're going to stay put this time for awhile.
Hope all's well. Here's how to find me starting March 1.

Hi Helene, Great news about your lecturing for the HUC. Kol Hakavod to you!
Please note my new e mail address: sfmerel@sbcglobal.net, or cantor@Merel.us
Incidentally, i just returned from a cantorial west coast conference in Santa Barbara where I gave a Master Class for 70 cantors and soloists on Jewish Art Songs. I am soon closing out my aol account. Love, Shelly
I am going to officiate for Lori Ginsburg wedding. How nice!
Eemah,
Thanks for taking the time to keep everyone connected and up to date.
I just started a new job as the Assistant Director of The American Jewish Committee, San Diego Chapter. The American Jewish Committee is the pioneer human relations agency. In San Diego we are focusing our efforts on Israel advocacy, developing a Latino-Jewish coalition, meeting with local consulates about various concerns, dialogue with the Christian Community, and meeting with political leaders and the media to convey our support for Israel and our fight against Anti-Semitism and bigotry of all kinds.
We also have a young leadership development group that meets regularly to discuss local issues. It is a great group of people with a variety of professions. If anyone is still in town that you think would be interested please pass along my contact information. I can be reached at smalla@ajc.org. I hope all is well with you and your family!

Hi, Eemah
Shabbat shalom to you too! Thanks for the newsletter. I always enjoy hearing about everyone's news. The pictures didn't come through, unfortunately, on the last email.
Our Temple, Temple Beth El (I keep calling it Temple Beth Israel), here in Charlotte, NC will be losing its head rabbi in July 2004. They are actively looking for a replacement. If you know anyone who might be interested, I would be happy to provide more details. Charlotte has been our home for almost five years. It's a great place to live and raise children! The restaurants are even getting better and more diverse too!
Hope all is well.
Love,
Marissa (Schwartz) Brooks
